March – A Sense of Place

Enjoy a selection of stories that unfold within specific Colorado locations, written by Kent Haruf (author of the award-winning novel Plainsong, and Eventide), James Van Pelt, and Thomas Zigal (former Colorado resident and author of a mystery series set in Aspen, as well as other novels). Local actors include Dell Domnik, Debbie Knapp, and Guy Williams.

The Authors:

Kent Haruf is the award-winning author of the novel Plainsong, which has been adapted for the stage as a commission by the Denver Center Theatre Company, and will be performed there next January. In addition, he has continued to explore his fictional Holt County in Eventide and Where You Once Belonged. He has retired from teaching and now lives with his wife near Sedalia, in his native Colorado.

James Van Pelt lives in western Colorado with his wife and 3 sons. One of the finalists for the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer in 1999, and a finalist for the Nebula Awards, he teaches high school and college English. His first collection of stories, Strangers and Beggars, was recognized by the American Library Association as a Best Book for Young Adults. His second collection, The Last of the O Forms and Other Stories, was a finalist for the Colorado Blue Spruce Young Adult Book Award. His newest work is Summer of the Apocalypse, his debut young adult novel, after years of published short stories.

Thomas Zigal lived in Aspen in the late 1980s.  His life there provided rich material for his short story “Leave-taking” and for three mystery novels (so far) set in Aspen and featuring Kurt Muller, the former-hippie native Aspenite sheriff of Pitkin County. The first two books in the series – Into Thin Air and Hardrock Stiff – have been released in new quality paperback editions from Toby Press.  Zigal’s most recent novel, The White League, is set in New Orleans and won the 2005 fiction prize from the Writers League of Texas.  He now lives in Austin, Texas.
